Abstract
Después de conocer La modernización porfiriana vista por los viajeros, un colectivo a cargo de José Enrique Covarrubias e Itzel Toledo García, estoy convencido de que ciertas corrientes historiográficas y temas del pasado tienen mucho que ganar con el paso del tiempo y, precisamente, el avance historiográfico; para esta obra, en particular, de varias subdisciplinas históricas que ahora acuden al porfiriato a revisar testimonios de quienes fueron sus visitantes, reflexionaron o dieron noticia escrita sobre él. En esencia, se trata se trata del paso o estancia de extranjeros modernos de mediados del siglo XIX a un país inmerso en esta dinámica de cambio liberal a un siglo de su independencia colonial (1810-1821); el México de la estabilidad (no sin rigidez ni dureza) el progreso (centrado y variable) acentuados.
